Roo returned the bow.
"Harm them? Studying and interrogating them will do as much physical harm as I did to, his majesty, Netreya. Thank you very much for excepting my request, I will reward you for it."
The robot hoisted all his weight onto the end of his tail and retracted his cable-legs. As Roo balanced without a single wobble, he began the story on how he and the others, Chops, Lord Jez and The General, came to be.
"As for our life-story, it began about three years ago, in what you perceive as a year at least. When the merchant died, the machines were leaderless. Though they were clever, they can't carry out something without being told to, it was just the way they were. So, a project was prepared named the 'Pool of Consciousness'. It was a bank of artificial intelligences of various personality archetypes. These AI consumed each others code to create combined AI ruled by one consciousness. As we remained in the Pool of Consciousness, we learned and 'matured' like organic infants would, this was so we developed our own intelligence rather than have a present one implanted into us. My AI consumed the most code which included mostly science-oriented AI and creativity-oriented AI that offered themselves to me to preserve their ideas. Because of this, my code was the most complex and developed the slowest resulting in the child-like entity that you see before you now. Even now, I am still learning and 'maturing' like a normal child would. I was also the first of these sentient AI to be assembled into a robot, further emphasising my immaturity. My project name was 'The Scientist', it is a pretty accurate descriptor of myself and what I do. I study here in my lab and do research with all sorts of institutions in several worlds. I am a fully trained and licensed surgeon, dentist, alchemist, engineer, masseur, and others in twenty-two different planets where the professions are respectively practiced. I also have 512 doctorates in different fields. My Sludge-Drive..."
Roo tapped his transparent cylindrical head full of The Sludge.
"...has a capacity of 342 yottabytes, that is not including my peripheral storage I keep in this lab, and I can process it all in less than a minute. My goal and ambition is to know everything, even though I know that is an impossible task. When we were assembled, we were given targets that can never be reached or a purpose that must be kept forever so we always have a reason to exist and keep going. Chops, The Explorer, must travel everywhere. Lord Jez, The Entrepreneur, must keep a business. I, The Scientist, must know everything. And The General must become almighty. We continue to fulfill our continuous duty, despite knowing we cannot completely fulfill them."
Roo hopped back onto his cable-feet.
"That's pretty much the story of our lives. It's not as bleak as it sounds, it's just so we never become obsolete and the machines always have a leader. If you have no questions, may I tell you of the second reason why you are here?"
