Eh, I'm not a fan of the dumbing down but I don't see it as unholy as those on Bioware social forums do. Anyway here's my lineup:
Varric- He's my bro. My Main man. Seriously, I take him everywhere for his impeccable wit and skill for irritating ol' Broody.
Merrill- She's a mage, has a delightful brogue and is elven.
Anders- He's blonde, hates christianity the chantry and a cat person. What's not to like?

Also, I really liked Varric but my party of Anders Fenris and Merril is just awesome for the tension because Fenris is like "MAAAAAAAAAAAGES!!!" and Merrill is like "Blood magic, umad?" and Anders just kinda talks to himself about his cat
